Like a game of musical chairs, students from Humble High School walked around a table, carefully choosing their chairs. Although there was no music and plenty of seats, when this school year ends the 10 students will finish on top. Literally.

The students are the highest ranked seniors in Humble High School’s Class of 2009.

“These top tier students will go on to do great things,” said Principal Charles Ned. “Our top 10 is reflective of the diversity of our campus.”

Valedictorian Jonathan Sheffield will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station where he will major in chemical engineering. Sheffield, who attended Humble Elementary and Humble Middle School said his most memorable activities were singing in the a cappella choir, lettering in golf and being a part of the National Honor Society.

Salutatorian Kellen McGriff will study business administration at Texas State University. McGriff is a recipient of the McCoy School of Business Scholarship. He said his most memorable high school moments were being a three-year varsity letterman on the baseball team, volunteering at Octavia Fields Library and being nominated for the Elliot Curtis Leadership Award.

One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot of Workforce Solutions near FM 1960 and Whitaker in Humble that started as a dispute between a man and woman shortly after 11 a.m. May 26.

According to Humble Police Department Lt. Jay Wrobliske, the man opened fire at the woman while she was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked outside Workforce Solutions.

“She got out of the vehicle and he fired several more rounds,” Wrobliske said. “She was struck in the shoulder and transported to Ben Taub Hospital. Her injuries are non-fatal.”

Wrobliske said employees at Workforce Solutions acted bravely when they pulled the woman inside the business to remove her from harm’s way.

An Humble Police officer working extra security at a local bank responded to the shooting within seconds, Wrobliske said.

“The officer observed a male suspect with a pistol and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon,” Humble Police officials said in a press release. “The suspect fired at the officer and the passenger side window of the vehicle the suspect was kneeling beside was blown out.”

Suspects impersonate police in Humble area home invasion

By OBSERVER STAFF
Updated: 05.20.09
Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking for four men in connection with a home invasion at a residence in unincorporated Humble in the early morning hours of May 11.

The suspects reportedly falsely identified themselves as members of law enforcement when they crashed through the front door of a home in the 15000 block of Roche Rock, south of Humble city limits near Beltway 8, around 4:30 a.m. while the young couple and three small children were sleeping inside.

“They heard someone beating on the front door,” HCSO investigators said in a media address. “The front door was forced open and approximately four male suspects entered the residence, yielding pistols.”

The suspects were dressed in police gear and announced they were “police”. The suspects forced the victims in the living room where they were assaulted and bound with duct tape. The suspects demanded cash and took possession of several items before fleeing in a white Ford Crown Victoria.

Project management students give back to the community

By OBSERVER STAFF

Giving back to the community was not what they planned to do when they enrolled in Lone Star College-Kingwood’s project management class, but through a class project that’s just what they did.

Larry Hartley, professor for information and project management, said the class objective was to learn and apply current project management techniques and methodologies.

Students, divided into groups, are given the task of developing a project for an outside customer, preferably a nonprofit community group. They must research their client, develop a plan, make a proposal, come up with budgets and schedules, and then complete their project and give a presentation to the class and their customers.

Hartley said he was impressed by each team’s initiative, planning and work ethic.

“They all did a really good job.”

One team chose Volunteers for Animal Protection after hearing about the damage the agency received from Hurricane Ike. VAP’s mission is to rescue and find forever homes for abandoned, abused and neglected animals in Kingwood and its surrounding areas.

Team members Angel Medina, Jorge Cerda and Anastasia Bakhvalova helped to rebuild fences, clean up and spend time with the animals. In addition to their labors, they raised $150 to donate to the shelter. The team said it felt good to do something for someone else.

“This class was very goal-oriented,” Medina said. “It was a very useful class and we learned things to use in everyday life, as well as business.”

Hartley said he was particularly impressed by the team members who helped out the animal shelter.

“They contributed a lot of manual labor. The kids pitched in and cleaned up, built fences and brought in a lot of supplies for the pets.”

The next two teams both chose to help FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center. FamilyTime’s mission is to provide an outreach program and accessible services to families and individuals in crisis through counseling, crisis intervention, information and referral, and shelter.

Maplebrook Elementary in Atascocita closed due to suspected swine flu case

By OBSERVER STAFF
Updated: 05.01.09
The following information was posted on the Humble Independent School District Friday, May 1:

Maplebrook Elementary will closed until May 18 as a child has been diagnosed with a probable case of H1N1. Thankfully, the child is recovering and doing well. As is customary, the Center for Disease Control has directed that the probable case be treated as if it is a confirmed diagnosis. At the CDC’s direction, the school will close for 14 calendar days. Teachers will be asked to report back to work on May 11 th.

Symptoms of H1N1 may include fever (temperature over 101), body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Please contact your child’s medical provider if your child experiences symptoms.

One of the most effective ways to limit the spread of flu is through social distancing, which is based on scientific knowledge of how the influenza virus spread. By closing the school, health officials believe the number of people who become sick may be contained.

Steps that you can take, as a family, to prevent getting and spreading influenza, include:

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners also are effective.

Cough or sneeze into your elbow.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Stay home from work or school if you feel sick and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Humble ISD will request a waiver from the Texas Education Agency so that the missed days will not need to be made up. This will be done to limit the disruption to the lives of our students and employees any more than necessary.

On campuses, custodians will be spending additional time disinfecting the nurse’s office, athletic areas, and door knobs, student desks, cafeteria tables, etc. Please continue to check the Humble ISD web site for the latest information and updates as this is a fluid situation.

Your BEST option!
